Das Leben kurz, und wenig komm ich weiter.
Den Sinnen zwar scheint diese Wohnung heiter,
der Seele nicht, sie bittet mich : stirb an.

Die Welt ist blind, auch Beispiel kam empor,
dem Bessere Gebräuche unterlagen ;
das Licht erlosch und mit ihm alles Wagen ;
das Falsche frohlockt, Wahrheit dringt nicht vor.

Ach wann, Herr,  gibst du das, was die erhoffen, 
die dir vertrauen? Mehr Zögern ist verderblich,
es knickt die Hoffnung, macht die Seele sterblich.

Was hast du Ihnen so viel Licht verheißen, 
wenn doch der Tod kommt, um sie hinzureißen,
in jenem Stand, in dem er sie betroffen.

Von Sünden voll, mit Jahren überladen,
verwurzelt in des tristen Brauches Boden,
seh ich mich nahe neben beiden Toden
und nähre doch mein Herz mit giftigem Schaden.

Eigene Kräfte hab ich nicht genügend,
zu ändern Leben, Liebe, Los und Sitte,
ohne den Wink, der, nicht aus unsrer Mitte,
herüberwirkt, uns leitend und uns rügend.

Das reicht nicht aus, daß du mir Lust gibst, hin
wo sich die Seele formt, zurückzueilen,
jetzt nicht aus nichts wie einst am Anbeginn.

Nimmst du das Irdische ihr ab, vorher
schenk ihr die Hälfte von dem Weg, dem steilen,
und mach ihr sicherer die Wiederkehr.

Wie falsch sie war,  von Irrtum überladen,
und was ein jeder,  sich zum Nachteil,  hofft.

Verliebtes Denken,  einstens froh und leer,
Was ist's mirs jetzt vor zweien Toden wert?
Des einen bin ich sicher,  einer droht.

Malen und Bilden stillt jetzt längst nicht mehr
Die Seele,  jener Liebe zugekehrt,
Die offen uns am Kreuz die Arme bot.
