Wie soll ich meine Seele halten, daß

Ach gerne möcht ich sie bei irgendwas
Verlorenem im Dunkel unterbringen
an einer fremden stillen Stelle, die
nicht weiterschwingt, wenn deine Tiefen schwingen.

Doch alles, was uns anrührt, dich und mich,
nimmt uns zusammen wie ein Bogenstrich,
der aus zwei Saiten eine Stimme zieht.
Auf welches Instrument sind wir gespannt?
Und welcher [Geiger]1 hat uns in der Hand?

senza che tocchi la tua? Come
guidarla verso mete diverse?
Potessi io in qualche oscuro,
Sperduto luogo tenermela celata,
in un luogo silenzioso e straniero
che non torni ad agitarsi, se nell'intimo tuo ti agiti.
Ma tutto ciò che ci tocca, a me e a te,
insieme ci prende, simile a un arco
che da due corde un solo suono cede.
Su quale strumento le nostre corde si tendono?
E quale violinista nella sua mano ci tiene?
O dolce canto.
